Historical Context
Administrative Genius
Buganda's county system is one of the most sophisticated pre-colonial administrative structures in sub-Saharan Africa. Each Masaza was governed by a Saza Chief appointed by the Kabaka, answerable to the Lukiiko (Parliament).
Buganda originally had 20 counties. In 1964, Buyaga and Bugangaizi were ceded to Bunyoro Kingdom - reducing the total to 18 Masaza.
The Administrative Hierarchy
Since 2004Annual Tournament
The Masaza Cup
Every year Buganda Kingdom's 18 counties compete in the Masaza Cup - one of Uganda's most beloved football tournaments. More than a sporting event, the Cup is a celebration of county pride, clan identity, and Kiganda spirit.
Running since 2004, the tournament has become a platform for discovering Uganda's grassroots football talent. Many Uganda Cranes players were first spotted at the Masaza Cup.
